Wireless HiFi Audio Distribution System

Short range wireless distribution of high quality audio signals has a lot of applications that currently are less attractive because of the need for cables, e.g. head phones, active multiway loudspeaker systems, etc. Recently, chip sets have become available which allow the development of small size wireless distribution systems for high quality multichannel audio, which support digital and analog signal interfaces.

In this project we are interested in the development and demonstration of a wireless audio distribution system operating in the 2.4 GHz band, which accepts inputs from an analog as well as a digital HiFi audio source (2 - 4 channels, sample frequency at least 44.1 kHz, 16 or 24 bits per sample) and distributes the signals to multiple receivers (maximum of 4 receivers). The final product consists of one transmitter and two receivers, each with a 2-channel analog and digital input and output, respectively.

Since the 2.4 GHz band is usually heavily used by Wireless LAN systems, it is of interest to test the robustness of the developed system on the issues of coverage distance and its sensitivity to interference.

Assignment

  • Develop PCBs for the transmitter and receiver
  • Implement one transmitter and two receiver boards
  • Assess the coverage range for HiFi acoustic signals
  • Assess the sensitivity of the develped system
  • Discuss its performance (strong and weak points) and potential improvements.
