Plasmonics on CMOS

In between the "electron" and "light" progagation behavior of EM fields are plasmonics. Properties have been studied in physics but now is the time to move this into devices and systems.

Surface-Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) consists of light that propagates along the surface of a metal coupled to coherent oscillations of the free electrons within the metal. Interest in utilizing these SPPs for optical data transmission and processing has led to a wide variety of light-guiding structures and the development of new passive and active optical components. In this project, we want to gain a thorough understanding of SPP propagation along different types of non-ideal metal films (gold, silver, and copper), since this is crucial for designing SPP-based optical devices that successfully transmit and process optical information. Of particular interest to us is the coupling between different light guiding elements, the effects of fabrication defects of metallic films on SPP propagation, and crosstalk between discrete wave guiding structures.

Assignment

The goal of this project is to gain an understanding of how SPPs propagate along non-ideal metallic structures. Numerical simulation tools are available for this purpose and the candidate should be able to apply these simulators to realistic SPP configurations. Furthermore, different models describing how a metal reacts to the presence of light may have to be incorporated in the simulation tools and analytical solution methods can be applied as well. The actual M.Sc. assignment will take place in consultation with the M.Sc. candidate.

Requirements

A solid background in mathematics and basic electromagnetics is preferred and knowledge of Matlab is a must.
